Humidity Domes and Air Exchange

Fresh cuttings have little or no root function, so they lose water faster than they can replace it. A clear humidity dome reduces that stress while the first roots form. The useful range is not simply “as humid as possible.” Constant saturated air with no exchange can encourage stem rot, algae, and fungal problems.

For the first few days, a higher humidity environment helps leaves stay firm. After that, gradually increase ventilation by opening dome vents or briefly removing the cover. This hardening process prepares young plants for normal room humidity and reduces transplant shock.

Condensation is a clue, not a complete answer. Heavy, persistent water droplets on the dome may mean the tray is too wet, too warm, or receiving inadequate air exchange. Leaves should look hydrated, not dripping. If you are hand-misting, mist lightly and only when needed. Overmisting keeps foliage wet and can create more problems than it solves.

A propagation heat mat can be valuable in a cool basement, greenhouse shoulder season, or other low-temperature location. Root-zone warmth generally supports faster rooting, but excessive heat dries plugs and fuels pathogens. Use a thermostat rather than running a heat mat continuously without monitoring. In many setups, moderate root-zone warmth and slightly cooler air produce steadier results.

Light for Newly Taken Cuttings

New cuttings need light, but they do not need high-intensity flowering or production lighting. Too much light increases transpiration before roots can supply water. A gentle LED propagation fixture, T5 fluorescent fixture, or dimmable LED set low over the canopy is usually a better fit.

Run a consistent photoperiod suited to the crop and keep fixture intensity modest during the unrooted stage. If leaves bleach, curl upward, or wilt despite adequate humidity, check light intensity and canopy temperature before assuming a nutrient problem.
